Hertha BSC Defender, Márton Dárdai, Commits to Hungarian National Team

Hungary Today 2024.01.23.

The defender, who has been playing for German youth national teams, has decided that in the future he wants to commit to the national team of his parents’ country, meaning that Márton Dárdai will be a Hungarian national team player.

As Nemzeti Sport reported, Marco Rossi, the head coach of the Hungarian national team, was in Berlin in early December last year to talk to former head coach Pál Dárdai’s middle son, Márton.

Márton Dárdai, 21, has played a total of 24 times for various German national youth teams (U16, U17, U19, U21) and last November he noted he had not yet decided which senior team he would prefer to play for.

Rossi said in the days before Christmas that he would definitely like to give Dárdai a chance in March.

On Monday evening, Dárdai announced on his Instagram account that he had made his decision. The Hertha defender wrote at length in German in his post, saying that in recent weeks he had been asked a lot about which country he envisioned playing for, and he tried to give himself as much time as possible to make the final decision.

“I also used the days off at the end of last year to make a choice with my family and my advisors that would make me feel good not only now but in the future, and that was not easy at all. In the future I will play for Hungary. I would also like to thank all the coaches of the German national youth teams and all the German fans. The decision I have made is a matter of the heart and I am very excited to represent my parents’ country at  the international level in the future,” Dárdai wrote in German, before switching to Hungarian.

I cannot wait to play for the Hungarian national team and to meet you regularly at the stadium!”

Since its publication, Dárdai’s post has been commented on by several former and current Hungarian national team players, with Dominik Szoboszlai, Péter Gulácsi, Krisztián Németh, and Loic Nego all welcoming Dárdai’s decision – at least that is what the heart and biceps emojis suggest.

Dárdai’s debut for the Hungarian national team could take place in March this year, although the team has no opponent for the two preparation matches yet.
