Péter Szijjártó (L) and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi (R)

Maintaining high-level cooperation with China is in the interest of both Hungary and Europe, said Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó in Beijing on Monday. Without it, the competitiveness of the economy cannot be ensured and the consequences of breaking off relations would be tragic, he stressed.

Péter Szijjártó held talks with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, on the war in Ukraine. In this context, the minister thanked China for its efforts and praised the peace plan presented by Beijing. It is the only proposal that recognizes that there is no solution on the battlefield, he emphasized.

The two foreign ministers also discussed the situation in Israel. Szijjártó stressed that failure to avoid escalation could easily lead to one of the worst humanitarian disasters in human history. On economic issues, the Hungarian Foreign Minister said that it is no exaggeration to say that

Chinese investments, if they come to Europe, will most likely be made in Hungary.

He noted the importance of Hungary becoming a meeting point for Eastern and Western investments, especially in the automotive industry, crucial for the future of the European economy.

Referring to the expansion of the Budapest-Belgrade railroad line, Szijjártó explained that the infrastructural cooperation between China and Central Europe is priority, and it will enable Hungary to take a leading position in transporting Chinese goods to Western Europe via Greek ports.

The project will be completed by 2025, and Serbia will complete it as well, therefore one of the most modern railroad lines in Europe will be available for both passenger and freight transport between Budapest and Belgrade,”

he said.

Lastly, he reiterated his opposition to the separation of the European and Chinese economies, which some would like to see. He recalled that the threads of European-Russian cooperation had been cut one by one over the past year and a half, despite the fact that they had provided the basis for economic growth.

“Hungary will reject and obstruct any unreasonable proposal that would limit or even cancel the economic cooperation between China and the European Union. Thus, we will not support possible tariffs or other obstacles for the Chinese electric car industry and will oppose Western European pressure to limit our economic cooperation with China,” Szijjártó affirmed.
