Police stopped demonstrators who tried to march to the Hungarian embassy in Rome on Saturday, to demand the release of ANTIFA-linked political activist Ilaria Salis, who is on trial in Hungary.
The diplomatic mission’s building was protected by the Italian authorities, with the streets leading up to it blocked, preventing access to the embassy. Nearly a hundred far-left demonstrators tried to break through the police cordon, throwing smoke bombs, but were repelled by the police.
The protest was organized by the so-called anarchist student movements. Another pro-Palestinian march was held, and since October it has been repeated every Saturday. However, this time the demonstration also demanded the release of the Italian far-left activist detained in Hungary.
From Hungary to Palestine, let everyone be free!” was written on the banner and “We are all anti-fascists! Out of prisons with everyone! Free Palestine!” they chanted.
In central Milan, around 100 members of the Sentinelle (Guards) movement held a demonstration for the release of a woman detained in Hungary. Members of the radical youth group Rivolta (Rebellion) occupied the offices of the Hungarian honorary consulate in Venice for two hours on Friday and then continued their protest in the streets.
Meanwhile, in Berlin, Minister of Culture and Innovation János Csák stated that
assaulting someone or attacking an institution because of their opinion is incompatible with European culture.”
The building of the Collegium Hungaricum in Berlin was spray-painted during an attack on January 26, committed by a so-called anti-fascist group. According to their statement, the attack was the result of a Hungarian criminal case that began at the end of January this year in connection with the February 2023 ANTIFA attacks in Budapest.
The minister said that the security at the cultural institution had been strengthened.
