Car Crashes Involving Migrants on the Rise in Hungary

Barbara Bene 2022.09.02.

Four people died and several others were injured on Thursday morning outside Kapuvár after a car drove into the riverbed from the Répce bridge, police reported. It is speculated that the car was probably carrying migrants.

For reasons unknown, the driver drove off the Répce Bridge into the riverbed on a road in the western part of Hungary, and the vehicle sank into the muddy water. Four people died of serious injuries at the scene of the accident and eight others were taken to hospital, one of them by ambulance helicopter.

The police have established that the passengers were probably migrants, whose nationality is still unknown, and that they were probably being transported by a trafficker.

During the summer, there have been a large number of car accidents on Hungarian roads involving illegal immigrants and human traffickers.

At the beginning of August, three people were killed and eleven injured in an accident near Bócsa, 120 kilometers south of the Hungarian capital. The driver was a Georgian national who was trying to smuggle fifteen people across Hungary towards Western Europe in a car. The man did not give way at an intersection and collided with another car after which the vehicles caught on fire. Two of the border-crossers died at the scene, stuck inside the burning vehicle. Twelve of the injured occupants of the two cars were taken to the hospital, one of whom later died.

Also in August, twenty migrants were injured when the smuggler driving the truck carrying them drove into a ditch near Budapest. The foreigners, who identified themselves as Indian, Afghan, and Pakistani citizens, were taken to the hospital.

In the same month, a Hungarian District Prosecutor’s Office brought charges against a 17-year-old Moldovan man who drove his car off the road while transporting thirteen illegal Syrian immigrants, and then fled the scene without providing assistance to the passengers.

The situation at the southern borders of Hungary is deteriorating quickly with thousands of illegal migrants arriving to the border weekly.
