Bence Rétvári Urges Shift to Protect External Borders of the EU

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.01.26.

In Brussels, the focus remains on migration management rather than stopping migration or protecting external borders, according to Bence Rétvári, Parliamentary Secretary of State of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

After the meeting of EU interior ministers, the Hungarian Secretary of State emphasized that Brussels continues to adhere to ineffective measures in migration management.

The European Union is currently working to ‘cement’ the details of the EU’s migration and asylum pact, adopted in December, by introducing nine pieces of legislation. These proposals include the distribution of illegal migrants among Member States based on quotas, financial penalties for countries refusing to accept migrants, and a rule suggesting that 28.3% of illegal migrants’ applications should be processed in Hungary. This could potentially lead to the establishment of migrant camps, or so called ‘migrant ghettos,’ at the Hungarian border.

Mr. Rétvári expressed Hungary’s belief that the EU is following the wrong path and should focus on protecting its external borders and defending the European continent.

He emphasized that Brussels seems committed to its misguided decisions, not only in migration but also in the context of the war in Ukraine. While discussing Brussels’ sanctions policy, he suggested that it has failed, causing suffering across Europe, yet it is still hailed as a success and achievement in Brussels.

Mr. Rétvári concluded by expressing confidence that real change is needed for the upcoming European Parliament elections in June and that the results could bring the desired transformation.
