Austro-Hungarian Anti-Migration Cooperation is Bringing Results

In Austria, the massive countermeasures have led to a 30 percent decrease in asylum applications in the first half of 2023 compared to the same period last year, Die Welt writes in an article.

According to the paper, whose article was also summarized by the Mandiner portal in Hungarian, Austria’s success was due to three measures.

First, fast and urgent procedures, frequent deportations and controls deter further asylum seekers.

Second, Austria is consistent in its border protection. More than 130 police officers support Serbia, Hungary and northern Macedonia. In mid-May, controls at Austria’s borders with Hungary and Slovenia were also extended for another six months. This is to prevent the Western Balkan countries and Hungary from simply pushing migrants northward as they have in the past, according to the article.

Since December 2022, 31 Austrian police officers have also been working with their Hungarian counterparts as part of “Operation Fox” to search for illegal migrants and people smugglers up to 15 kilometers from the common border.

So far, 58 people smugglers have been arrested in the border area.

The third point is modern technology. The mobile border guards are adequately equipped with night vision devices and thermal imaging cameras. There is also a modern fleet of 300 drones, which will be expanded by another 50 drones next year.
