Hungary’s state-owned gas reservoirs hold less gas than one third of their capacity, the Saturday edition of the daily Magyar Nemzet reported. The paper noted that gas reservoirs have to be filled up to 40% capacity a few weeks before the start of the heating season.
Hungarian gas storage company Magyar Földgáztároló told the paper that its four reservoirs with a capacity to hold a combined 4.3 billion cubic metres of gas are currently only holding a total of 1.2 billion cubic metres, or 27.8% of their total combined capacity.
Magyar Nemzet said the daily increase in gas reserves is a mere 0.3%. Last year at this point reservoirs held a total of 3.13 billion cubic metres of gas. Hungary consumes 8-10 cubic metres of gas annually, 70% of which is used up over the winter. Last year households consumed more than 4.2 cubic meters of gas, the paper said.
