The Star of Oscar-winning Hungarian Director László Nemes’ New Film Has Been Announced

According to origo.hu and Tilos Rádió, actress Juli Jakab will be playing the lead role in Hungarian director László Nemes’ new film Sunset.

Nemes rose to international prominence when his Holocaust film, Son of Saul, won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards in 2016 (you can read more about Son of Saul here and here).

The male lead will be played by Romanian actor Vlad Ivanov, best known for his role in the film 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.

Jakab was cast following a year-and-a-half-long search. She had a small role in Son of Saul, and has had roles in the Hungarian indie films No Man’s Island and For Some Inexplicable Reason.

According to Laokoon Filmgroup’s official website, Sunset takes place in Budapest in 1915. The film’s synopsis states that

Iris (21) exits the orphanage where she was raised to become a seamstress. With plans of immigrating to New York City, she heads to a lady’s hat store which once belonged to her late parents and is now run by their former associate, Oszkar.

Filming on Nemes’ latest project will begin in June. According to current plans, Sunset will hit theaters in 2018.
