Seven Hungarian cities have submitted applications to become the European Capital of Culture (ECB) in 2023, including Debrecen, Eger, Gödöllő, Győr, Székesfehérvár, Szombathely and Veszprém, State Secretariat for Culture said.
The application deadline was 20 December and the winner city, which will be one of the cultural capitals in 2023, will be announced in late 2018. A twelve-member international jury of independent experts will assess the applications submitted to Ministry of Human Capacities and a shortlist will be announced early next year.
In 2023, two cities will be referred as the European Capital of Culture, one from Hungary and one from the United Kingdom. In 2010, the South Hungarian Pécs was the European Capital of Culture.
The European Capital of Culture initiative was designed to highlight the richness and diversity of cultures in Europe, celebrate the cultural features Europeans share, and foster the contribution of culture to the development of cities.
