One of the highlights of the Academy Awards season, the Oscar luncheon was held this Monday, where nominees, including Ildikó Enyedi, director of Hungary’s Foreign Language Film nominee On Body and Soul, gathered to congratulate each other during a glamorous lunch at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. The event culminated in taking the annual class photo.
Making the group photo was a lengthy process as everyone was called to the picture one by one and it took more than 30 minutes until everyone got their own place. Enyedi was placed in a central place, in the first row, next to the legendary NBA basketball player, Kobe Bryant and close to the Oscar statuette. Previous Hungarian Academy Award nominees, Nemes Jeles László (Son of Saul) was placed in the middle of the picture near the statue as well, while Kristóf Deák (Sing) took his place in the back row for his own photo.
The lunch is an important part of the Oscars campaign, 175 nominees were present out of the total 205 and even Kobe Bryant, who was nominated with his animated short, Dear Basketball, said “This is better than any All-Star Game I was ever in.”

The American Film Academy announced in January that Ildikó Enyedi’s On Body and Soul has officially been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In addition to being one of the five movies in the running for the Foreign Language Oscar, On Body and Soul also holds the distinction of being the only Foreign Language Oscar nominee directed by a woman.
In an interview, Enyedi talked about being nominated for an Oscar after almost 20 years without directing a feature movie:
That such a tender film about the human condition is nominated for an Academy Award — my first film in nearly two decades, and in a year where so many exceptional women are being honored for their work behind-the-camera — humbles me. I am so proud to be representing Hungary in the Oscar race.
The other films under consideration are A Fantastic Woman from Chile, directed by Sebastian Lelio; The Insult, by Lebanese director Ziad Doueiri; Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Loveless; and Swedish film The Square, by Ruben Östlund.
On Body and Soul tells the story of two people working at a slaughterhouse in Budapest who discover that they have the same dreams at night and they attempt to make them come true. The film won the Grand Prix of the Berlinale last year, as well as the top prize at the Sydney Film Festival. Leading actress of the film, Alexandra Borbély has won the Best European Actress Award earlier this year for her role in the film. Rights for the film were acquired in 91 countries. In the US, Netflix will screen it from February 2018.
The 90th Academy Awards ceremony, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the second year in row, will be held on 4 March in Los Angeles.
