Have you heard about the “stars of Eger”? Thanks to a new movie trailer they are shining now more than ever!
Well, in 1552 the mighty forces of the Ottoman Empire led by Kara Ahmed Pasha laid siege on the Castle of Eger, located in the northern part of the Kingdom of Hungary, but the heavily outnumbered defenders (approx. 2000 soldiers) led by István Dobó repelled the attacks of the 40000-strong Ottoman army and succesfully defended the castle.
The heroic achievement was seized upon by legendary writer Géza Gárdonyi, who wrote a historical novel about the siege and the adventurous life of the defenders in 1899. Gárdonyi’s book entitled “Eclipse of the Crescent Moon” – one of the the most popular Hungarian novels – was adapted into a feature-length film “Stars of Eger“, which is still regularly shown on Hungarian television.
However, videomaker Palóc Videotéka has created a new Hollywood style trailer for the movie made back in the 1960s. Check it out and decide for yourself if the old Hungarian heroes can compete with today’s Hollywood icons! English subtitles available:
