Chicago Fire’s Hungarian international striker Nemanja Nikolic won the 2017 MLS Golden Boot trophy on Sunday, finishing his first year in US Major League Soccer (MLS) with 24 regular season goals, American sports site mlssoccer.com reported.

The former Videoton FC player was engaged in a back-and-forth battle for the Golden Boot with New York City FC ace David Villa for most of the season, but pulled away from the field with a hat trick in Chicago’s 3-2 win against Philadelphia last week.
Nikolic joined Chicago Fire from Legia Warsaw, where he has appeared in 56 league matches and scored 41 goals. The 29-year-old striker finished the 2015-16 season as the Polish league’s leading scorer, garnering him Player of the Year honors.
Prior to his move to Poland, Nikolics plied his trade in Hungary with Videoton FC from 2010-15, where he scored 87 goals in 149 league matches. The league’s top scorer in 2010, Nikolic also led his side to the Hungarian title in 2011 and 2015. Nikolic additionally scored 34 goals in 68 domestic cup matches with Videoton.
Son of a Hungarian mother and a Serbian father, Nemanja Nikolics was born in the town of Zenta in Vojvodina, Serbia. He spent time as a youth player with the local team, however, he began his professional career with Barcs in Hungary. Nikolics made his international debut for Hungary in October 2013, since he has scored three goals in 23 appearances for the Hungarian national team.
