Controversial British alt-right personality Milo Yiannopoulos will open the “The Future of Europe” conference during the V4 (Visegrad Group) Hungarian Presidency – 2017/18 at the Castle Garden Bazaar, Budapest in January. Yiannopoulos is a popular alt-right spokeman who is considered to be an agent provocateur by many.
As to the political views of the writer and editor of British, Jewish, Greek, and Irish roots, Mr. Yiannopoulos is a big fan of US President Donald Trump, but has distanced himself from Trump since US bombing strikes in Syria last year. He is openly gay, but is opposed to the extension of gay rights. He is also a critic of feminism, political correctness and Islam. He often caricatures the Catholic Church, a trait which may be irritating to other participating countries. On the other hand, his controversial, hard line comments regarding immigration and refugees might be attractive to some V4 governments who have also recieved international criticism for their statements and policies toward migrats.
He was an author at the far-right news and opinion site Breitbart, but was forced to resign following a series of controversial comments regarding child sexual abuse. In addition, in response to the same scandal, Simon & Schuster cancelled its plans to publish his autobiography.
His reception in the media and politics in Hungary has been, unsurprisingly, controversial. Hungarian political economist Zoltan Pogatsa has claimed that Yiannopoulos’ participation is understandable due to the self-described “troll’s” anti-refugee stance. Figures across the political left have condemned his participation, urging the government to cancel his speech. Agnes Vadai, vice president of the opposition party DK (Democratic Coalition) has gone even further asking the Minister of Interior to ban him from the country. However, Tamas Deutsch, a founding member of Fidesz and a participant in the upcoming conference has defended Yiannopoulous, claiming the attacks on the writer who has written articles claiming that “Birth Control Makes Women Unattractive and Crazy” are simply ‘political hysteria.’
