Hungarian low-fare airline Wizz Air launched a direct flight between Budapest and Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, on Thursday.
Speaking at the press briefing before takeoff, Economy Minister Mihaly Varga praised the preparation work for relaunching direct flights between Hungary and Kazakhstan and said that the connection to Kazakhstan was an important one for Hungary. Astana hosts the world fair this year, Varga noted. Expo 2017 Astana – Future Energy runs from June 10 until September 10, with the Hungarian pavilion exhibiting recent innovations, Varga said.
The flight takes less than 5 hours, linking another important city directly to Budapest, Jost Lammers, CEO of Budapest Airport said at the briefing.
At its current rate of growth, Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc Airport is expected to serve over 12 million passengers by the end of 2017, he said.
